Thousands of kilos of vegetables brought to the Dambulla Economic Centre have been thrown away during the past few days, much to the dismay of farmers.

On Friday, 40,000kg were destroyed, dealing farmers a devastating blow. Despite this, neither the government nor the administration of the Dambulla Economic Centre has intervened in the matter or begun an investigation, a spokesman for the farmer’s associations in the area said.

The centre’s administrator, Kristy Wijerathne, could not be contacted for a comment despite repeated attempts. It is understood that distribution transport costs prompted the decision to destroy the vegetables.
