At least 13 supporters of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) were injured when pro- Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) men stormed a meeting of the TNA in Kilinochchi yesterday, officials said.

The meeting to prepare for the proposed Northern Provincial Council elections was in progress at the TNA Jaffna district Parliamentarian S. Sritharan’s office in Kilinochchi town when the attack took place. TNA Jaffna District Parliamentarian E. Saravanapavan said that about 100 SLFP supporters who were conducting a protest march against their meeting stormed the office and attacked the participants. “They were armed with clubs and stones. They caused damage to the building and at least four of the vehicles of the MPs,” he said.

The MP said that although the Ministerial Security Division police guards were present they failed to prevent the crowd from entering the office premises. Military spokesman Ruwan Wanigasooriya said that according to information available the attack was against the anti-Sri Lankan actions of the TNA, particularly in Geneva.

“The people have also mentioned about TNA not being interested in their wellbeing and the party is more interested in the welfare of the LTTE rump abroad. Police have dispersed the crowd. Military has been alerted but there had not been any requirement for military involvement as the protesters dispersed when police asked them to do so,” he said.
