With effect from tomorrow Secretaries of Ministries and Chief Secretaries of Provincial Councils will be entrusted with the task of issuing vehicle permits to senior Government officials who are entitled to import motor vehicles on concessionary terms Ministry of Finance and Planning Secretary P.B.Jayasundera said.

The task was previously entrusted to the Trade and Investment Policy Department that comes under the Ministry of Finance and Planning.

Applications for duty free permits already received by the Department will be processed by it but those applying from tomorrow will have to do so through the Secretary of the respective Ministry or the Chief Secretary of the respective Provincial Council.

Among those who are entitled to duty free motor vehicle permits are senior level Government officials and university academics who have served in senior positions for over six years.Last November the Government removed the ban on the sale to another party of duty-free vehicles imported by senior public servants.

Previously a public servant could not transfer ownership of a vehicle to a third party until three years had elapsed from the date of purchase of the vehicle.
