The Government urged people not to fall prey to elements inciting racial and religious tension in the country in the wake of the attack on a clothing store in Pepiliyana on Thursday night.

Government Information Department Director General Professor Ariyaratne Atugala said in a statement after the incident said that elements with vested interest are trying to destabilise the country and urged people not to fall prey to such forces.

Prof. Atugala also requested the public to refrain from spreading rumours that lead to unrest among ethnic and religious groups but help the Government to maintain law and order to secure the peace and harmony in the country at this decisive juncture.

He also urged the media to inform the public in a manner that it does not aggravate tensions between people of different communities.
