In 1842 the school was inaugurated as a Methodist School by Rev. Peter Jerald De Silva which was administrated by the Methodist Council. Until 1906 the school was operated as a Sinhala medium school and in 1906, then principal Rev. C.E.P. Wijesinghe initiated to teach the students in the English medium as well.
1933 was a significant year for this school, as it was taken over by the government and named as Methodist High School. The school was given permission to operate as an English Medium School at Moratumulla. In 1934, J.L. Demale was appointed as the first government principal of the school. He was the pioneer of the

present school logo, school song and the school flag. Moreover, he initiated school cricket, little friends, Scouting, volleyball and netball in the school and brought them up to national and international level.
In 1968, the school was separated as Moratumulla Junior Vidyalaya and Methodist High School by the Government of Sri Lanka. Later in 1970 these schools were combined again and shifted to the present premises.
During the next few years many devoted principals served the college and brought many developments to infrastructure as well as the educational field. The most important milestone was reached by Methodist High School in 1994 as they gained

the status of 1C School as they were give permission to commence Advanced Level Arts and Commerce Streams.
One of their old boys Mr. M. Hemachandra Perera was appointed as the principal in 1998 and had done some services to the college. The College Cadet Corps, the Cricket team and Western Band were the few units initiated by him. Mrs. Swarnamali Fernando was the first lady principal appointed to Methodist High School. She was the pioneer of the school auditorium.
Today, Methodist High School comprises more than 1350 students and 56 academic staff. The present principal Mr.S. Deepal Mendis served 17 years as a deputy principal and vice principal at Methodist High School which brought him an extensive knowledge about the school.

The school has earned its reputation in the areas of academic excellence as well. In 2012 two students obtained 3A’s in their G.C.E. (A/L) examination (Commerce). Annually quite number of students enters university. The primary section is of great concern in their grade 5 scholarship examination. In 2012 one of their students scored 181 marks in the grade 5 scholarship examination.

For the first time in the history of Methodist High School, the Big match between Methodist High School and Dehiwela Shasthrananda Vidyalaya on March 14 and 15 re-united past pupils of the college.
Moreover, the past pupils association is organizing their 2nd Street Walk on May 31, to signify the strength of the college. This walk will be led by the past pupil and the Western Provincial Council Minister Mr. Morris Wijerathna and the college administration requests all past pupil and well-wishers to join this event.
