With Colombo Scope drawing art lov ers in the capital, down in Galle, The Serendip Coast Festival is in full swing with a programme of celebrity sessions, among them a past President and Prime Minister, dinners with the likes of cricketing hero Kumar Sangakkara, and cookery demos with Darina Allen.
The next highlight of the Serendip Coast Festival is a discussion on “Gota’s War”, the book by journalist C.A. Chandraprema which tells the story of how Tiger terrorism was crushed.
Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa will give a talk on his version of the civil war and will answer questions at this session where he will be introduced by Herman Malinga Gunaratne, planter and author. The talk will be held tomorrow (March 25) at the Lighthouse Hotel’s Eddystone Room at 11 a.m. (Guests should be seated before 10.50 a.m.)
Tickets priced at Rs 1,000 are available at Mamas, Leyn Baan Street, Galle from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The talk will be followed at 1 p.m. with another exclusive event- Lunch with Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Lighthouse’s Cinnamon Room. This event is priced at Rs. 5,000.
The festival continues next weekend with a sailing regatta in Weligama on Saturday the 30th at 9 a.m, while “The best of….” competition, held at the Lighthouse Hotel at 10 a.m will see local chefs vying to make the best of rotis, chicken biryanis and lamprais. The cost per dish is priced at Rs. 1,000.
That evening, the Colombo Chamber Orchestra will perform a repertoire of classical pieces at the Dutch House at 7 p.m. Tickets for the concert are priced at Rs 1,500.
On Sunday, the final day of the festival, there will be a tea and tour at the White Tea Estate, Tittagalla, Ahangama at 3 p.m while John Julius Norwich will talk about “One doesn’t come down from the cross” at 7 p.m. (For reservations phone: 091 438 0275)
