Rev. Fr. Perniola to be honoured for his scholarly work

Reverend Fr. Dr. Vito Perniola is to be awarded the prestigious Royal Asiatic Society medal scholarship, given once in several years. The event will take place on March 28.

Rev Perniola who holds degrees in Pali, Sanskrit and in Buddhist Studies has contributed immensely to academic activities in Sri Lanka through his contribution to historical studies in the 19 volumes on the history of the Catholic Church in Sri Lanka.

The volumes are English translations of original documents in Portuguese, Dutch, Italian, Latin, Spanish, and French. Containing over 10,000 pages, the volumes are based on documents sourced from archives in Goa, Rome, Lisbon, Sri Lanka, the archives of the Catholic Church and other sources. These volumes also contain several glossaries including names of places and foreign words.

Born in April 1913 in Bari, Rev. Perniola will celebrate his 100th birthday in a few weeks.
