In another dramatic development at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), its Director General Dr. Hareendra Dissa Bandara tendered his resignation to SEC Chairman Dr. Nalaka Godahewa on Friday.
“I have tendered my resignation and will be leaving by mid-May,” Dr. Dissa Bandara told the Business Times, an hour after he sent the letter.
“I decided to resign based on my principles,” he said, noting that a detailed letter explaining the reasons for his resignation will be followed soon.
He declined to comment further. The SEC, until recently, has been in turmoil over the past few years with two chairpersons – Indranee Sugathadasa and Thilak Karunaratne – being forced to resign and DG Malik Cader being transferred to the Finance Ministry after they imposed strict rules in the market to curb manipulation which angered powerful traders. Another SEC official said the DG’s contract ends in May .
