Victoria Golf and Country Club will host the Mackwoods Ladies Strokeplay Golf Championship from March 24 to 26 at Digana, Kandy. The competition which is open to all amateur lady golfers will be played for the Mackwoods Challenge Trophy. The silverware will be awarded to the player returning with the lowest aggregate gross score over 54 holes.
The competition which was inaugurated in 1974 in memory of the first Sri Lankan chairman Mackwoods, N.S.O. Mendis is organised by the Sri Lanka Golf Union, the local governing body for golf. The Mackwoods Stroke Play Golf Championship is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the ladies golfing calendar with a clear growth participation and enthusiasm. In the past present greats like Tiru Fernando, Thuhashini Selvaratnam, Dhinuka Boralessa, Jacky Dias, Suwen Selvaratnam, Niloo Jayatilleke and Yvonne Abeyratne have won this competition.
Golfers will also vie for the Nuwara Eliya Cup which will run concurrently with the main competition. The winner of this segment will be determined by lowest Aggregate Nett Score over 54 holes. In addition the Bronze Cup for the high handicap golfers and other daily prizes will be on offer. Reigning champion, Niloo Jayatilleke is tipped as the favourite to win the Mackwoods Stoke Play Golf Championship this year as well. – NA
