On Wednesday December 12th, the Induruwa-based Lideke Wery Educational Institute (LWEI) was one of the eight English language schools on the island to be awarded the Best Performing Centre-recognition by British organisation City & Guilds (C&G).

C&G is an authority in the field of teaching English as a second language, both in Sri Lanka and around the world. It rewarded the LWEI for years of delivering outstanding results and specifically that it is the only non-profit institute and the single institute in the Southern Province to receive this award.

The LWEI was founded in Kosgoda soon after the 2004 tsunami and, while currently located in Induruwa, still aims at providing education in IT and English to the financially underprivileged. Structural funding from the Netherlands keeps course fees at a very low level but through the availability of grants of up to 90% of those fees, even the poorest have access to the kind of high quality education of which they would otherwise be deprived.
