University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol is one of the largest universities in the UK and the largest in the southwest of England. After a careful research on the market needs and employment opportunities that a student would get at the completion of a degree, Northshore decided on providing the above degrees of UWE, Bristol to Sri Lankan students.

Northshore College of Business and Technology, offers four IT programmes of University of the West of England (UWE) which include of BSc [Hons] in Business Information Technology, BSc [Hons] in Software Engineering, BSc [Hons] in Computer Science and BSc [Hons] in Computing. A special feature of these programmes is that the 1st year of the degree is a common year for all 4 programmes. The students get the opportunity to study the core concepts of IT and then decide on which path they would be most interested in. This is especially beneficial to the students who would like to leave their options open until they know about the industry requirements and opportunities better.

The IT industry is fast growing and is a well paying industry. SLASSCOM says that they need over 6000 graduates per year. The state universities produce only just over 1000 IT graduates a year. Therefore there is a requirement and a great demand for the IT graduates. Sri Lankan businesses have different niche areas in IT. Therefore the graduates have the option of securing employment in various areas in the job markets.

The Engineering Programmes of the UWE, Bristol have the highest demand at Northshore College. At present, the following engineering programmes are offered:

MEng/BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering
MEng/BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering

These engineering programmes at Northshore provide the students with a three year B.Eng(Hons) option as well as a four year M.Eng option. The four year M.Eng programme satisfies one of the requirements under the ‘Washington Accord’ to become a chartered engineer and practise as an engineer in most parts of the world following accreditation of the programme by relevant professional bodies.

Northshore will be seeking accreditation from the Institute of Engineers, Sri Lanka and other recognized institutions such as Institute of Engineering and Technology, UK and Joint Board of Moderators, UK. Northshore has been offering two engineering degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and in Civil Engineering since April 2012.

Northshore has already established its School of Business and Management and it will be offering BSc(Hons) in Marketing Management, BSc(Hons) Human Resource Management BSc(Hons) Business Administration and Bsc(Hons) Accounting and Finance. In response to the demand among prospective students, Northshore is planning to offer two other undergraduate and post graduate programmes by January next year. These include BSc(Hons) Quantity Surveying and a highly recognized Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme.

The job opportunities are endless for those who have the required practical and theoretical knowledge. Unlike in the past, theoretical knowledge is not enough to secure a good job. The students need to develop their soft skills such as assertiveness, leadership and presentation skills etc. in order to be able to work in the international arena. At Northshore, there is a special program called ‘Northshore career development plan’ which focuses more on language skills, communication and presentation skills, leadership skills etc which is offered throughout all years.

Having already spent over Rupees one billion on the main building, Northshore has continued to invest money in improving its facilities. The institute has recently bought a plot of land in the vicinity to build a hostel complex. Once completed, this building complex will house not only accommodation facilities for over 400 students but will also a super market, restaurant and housing for both local and expatriate staff.

The main objective of this project is to enable students from other provinces and foreign students expected mainly from Maldives and Africa to have comfortable and safe accommodation closer to the Institute
