Taking e-commerce to the village

Dialog and Anything.lk, seen as two of Sri Lanka’s leaders in mobile communications and e-commerce have come together to build a product that would take e-commerce through the mobile phone into the villages, officials said.

Thilan Wijesinghe, Chairman of the newly-formed Digital Commerce Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. (DCL), told the Business Times that the synergies of the two key players provide a head start over the competition in the e- and m-commerce economy.

Last week Dialog invested US$1.6 million in a 25 per cent stake in DCL which has been formed merging anything.lk (the daily deals website), iBuy.lk, B2B, C2C trading portal Tradenet.lk, wow.lk and online classifieds site myTrader.lk. DCL brings together shareholders of Dialog and anything.lk. Dialog, which acquired loss-making Suntel recently, is unusually taking only a minority stake in the company but has an option of increasing its stake later.

“There are some strong synergies between the two groups. For example Dialog is strong in the rural areas which would help expand e-commerce using the anything.lk platform. It would also enable Dialog to expand its reach in the lucrative retail market,” Mr Wijesinghe said.

He said Dialog took a minority stake to further foster the entrepreneurial spirit of a company that has been innovative and entrepreneurial in character. Dialog would be represented on the DCL board by Dialog Axiata CEO Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya and Dialog director Moksevi Prelis.
