‘Golfers for Charity’, a golf tournament organised by the Royal Colombo Golf Club in aid of the neo-natal intensive care unit at the Castle Street Hospital for Women will be held on November 27.

The Royal Colombo Golf Club has a rich history of social and community involvement. In 2004, whilst commemorating its 125th anniversary, it was decided that one Poya day of the year would be allocated to conduct a golf tournament in aid of a worthy charity.

This fundraiser event is now a permanent and much looked forward to feature of the club’s golfing calendar. They have so far raised funds for the Sri Lanka Federation for the Visually Handicapped, the Ceylon Association for the Mentally Retarded, the National Council for Mental Health and the Ceylon School for the Deaf & Blind, among others. This year, they have chosen the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit at the Castle Street Hospital for Women as their beneficiary.

The Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit specialises in the care of ill or premature newborn infants and all complicated cases needing neonatal care from every part of the country are referred to the Castle Street Hospital for Women for specialised care. The funds raised from the event will be used to purchase a neonatal ventilator with high frequency mode, multi monitors, a portable echo/SCAN machine, a multi analyser blood gas machine and incubators.

Consultant Neonatologist Dr. L.P.C. Saman Kumara stressed on the importance of these devices to save the lives of the many newborns that come under the unit’s care. “As a Consultant Neonatologist working in the Special Baby Care Unit I am, with my team, working day and night to deliver quality care for neonates in the facilities,” he said.

“However, while we already have the knowledge and skills there is a shortage of necessary equipment.” The total cost of the equipment will come to almost Rs 7 million, which the Royal Colombo Golf Club hopes to raise through the charity event.
