When it comes to “educational experience” for students, the University of Wollongong (UOW) is at the top of the class in Australia, according to the 2013 Good Universities Guide.

Outperforming its much larger metropolitan counterparts, UOW has scored an amazing 30 stars out of a possible 30 in the six key educational experience categories – (1) Teaching quality, (2) Generic skills, (3) Graduate satisfaction, (4) Getting a job, (5) Positive graduate outcomes and (6) Graduate starting salary.

Under the Guide’s ranking system, only the top 20 per cent of universities, effectively the top eight, can be awarded a five-star rating in any one category.

“We have received the maximum five stars in some of these categories before but a perfect 30 for these teaching/learning indicators is an outstanding achievement,” the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Wellings said.

It is the 13th consecutive year that UOW has achieved five-star ratings for the categories of ‘Getting a job and ‘Positive graduate outcomes’. “The student experience is core to everything done at UOW. From the time a student starts at Wollongong, he/she is immersed in an active campus community with academic support and social activities that ensure their time is academically and socially fulfilling.

Professor Wellings cited UOW’s Peer Assisted Study Sessions programme as an example highlighting how students help other students to achieve the best results they can. It is a programme that has been recognised as the best of its kind in the world.

He said that at UOW, students have access to talented teachers, academic support and an active campus community –all where people genuinely know your name.

The Good Universities Guide ratings consolidates UOW’s place as one of Australia’s leading universities – it is already in the top 2% of universities according to the world ranking systems including: The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2012; QS World University Rankings 2012; and Academic Ranking of World Universities 2012  (previously Shanghai Jiao Tong rankings).

Wollongong is located just over an hour by train or road from central Sydney and has 22,000 students including 5,000 international students at the main Wollongong campus and the Sydney Business School in downtown Sydney.
