The Rotaract Club of Imperial Institute of Higher Education along with the National Blood Transfusion Centre, Narehenpita, is giving you an opportunity to do something amazing… GIVE BLOOD and SAVE LIVES.

The demand for blood in our region continues to grow. There is no substitute for the generosity of someone willing to brighten the lives of others through blood donations. Every volunteer blood donor can save up to 3 lives by donating once. From one unit of blood, red blood cells can be extracted for use in trauma or surgical patients. Plasma, the liquid part of blood, is administered to patients with clotting problems. The third component of blood, platelets, clots the blood when cuts or other open wounds occur, and are often used in cancer and transplant patients (Advance Transfusion and cellular therapies worldwide). Therefore we could understand the serious health need and how a blood drive can truly be a ‘gift of life’ that a healthy individual can give to others in their community who are sick or injured.

All of us may have a stereotyped thought that donating is not good for our blood, but did you know that a donor has benefits as well?
Some of the benefits are -

=Some doctors believe that it reduces the risk of heart diseases; Dr. Klein states that giving blood reduces the iron in the blood stream. Even though iron is an important element, too much of it would damage your heart and circulatory system.

=It stimulates the production of new blood cells and renews the system.

=It also reduces the chances of a heart attack to one third, especially for males.

=The most important is that it gives you a wonderful feeling of saving someone’s life. This is unexplainable and can only be sensed.

Let’s also not forget that we are stepping into the month of December, it’s the time of giving and sharing, so why not do something spectacular by giving and saving.

Don’t let this opportunity slip away, please be there on the 1st of December at the premises of IIHE (25 ˝, Tower Building, Station Road, Colombo-04) from 9 am onwards to save a life.
