The University of Kelaniya has always been committed towards its task of producing well-rounded graduates capable of contributing towards a positive change in the society with their knowledge cum skills. In achieving this objective, guidance needs to be of vital importance.

In this regard, the role played by the Career Guidance Unit of the University of Kelaniya is critical in determining its success. There is no better evidence to prove this fact than the “Inspiring the NEXT” Career Fair. In 2007 this event first came into existence as the brainchild of the Career Guidance Unit in collaboration with a few students. The event proved to be an instant success with the more than three hundred undergraduates along with the participation of thirty organizations. Following the enthusiastic feedback from both the companies and the participants the event was conducted for the second time, consecutively in year 2008 only to exceed its previous success by leaps and bounds. The years 2009, 2010 and 2011 proved the improvement in this event and achieved recognition from a broad perspective of the co-operate sector.

Today it has become the trade mark of the Career Guidance Unit of the University of Kelaniya, and has been given the status of an annual mega festival in the university.“Inspiring the NEXT” Career Fair 2012 commenced its activities with the inauguration ceremony which was held on the 15th November at the Faculty of Science Auditorium, University of Kelaniya. Mr. Ravi Jayawardena, CEO-Sales and Marketing of Maliban Biscuits Manufactories Ltd., graced the occasion as the honourable chief guest and keynote speaker. He marveled the audience by his motivational speech which indeed created the momentum to boost the spirits of the final year students of the University who will ultimately face the interviews at the final day of the career fair.

Afterwards, the first workshop of a series of five was conducted by Mr. Neminda Karunarathne, Manager, Human Resources of Regnis (Lanka) Plc on ‘CV and self preparation’. He brushed up the knowledge of the undergraduates on the preliminary necessities required to be possessed by a candidate facing an interview. Following this, will come the next workshops on ‘Soft skills development- a must in corporate’, ’Facing an interview and branding yourself’, ‘Culture change from academic to corporate’ and ‘Developing a positive attitude in the working environment’ which will be held consequently in the weeks to come.

Apart from these personal development programmes, the march towards the final day will comprise of a CV collection and screening process and mock interview sessions which will be conducted by Unilever Sri Lanka in December.
