UPFA National List MP Malini Fonseka , who resigned from her Parliamentary seat on September 24, only to have her resignation rejected by President Mahinda Rajapaksa the same day, will be sworn in as a Member of Parliament on October 9, when Parliament next meets.Ms. Fonseka sent her resignation letter to the Secretary General of Parliament, who informed the Elections Commissioner that the resignation had created a vacancy. The Elections Commissioner requested the UPFA Secretary to nominate an eligible person to fill the vacancy.

The UPFA Secretary has re-nominated Ms. Fonseka for the same post. “I, Mahinda Deshapriya, Commissioner of Elections, do hereby declare Mrs. Malini Fonseka elected as a member of the seventh Parliament to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of the aforesaid Mrs. Malini Fonseka,” the notification said.

Ms.Fonseka told the Sunday Times that she had accepted the re-nomination because the President had refused to accept her resignation.

In an interview with sister newspaper “Lankadeepa”, Ms. Fonseka said she had volunteered to step down because she felt a crisis was brewing within the Party, and that her resignation would help ease matters.

Ms. Fonseka’s resignation and re-appointment will not affect her pension, according to Parliament Deputy Secretary General, Neil Iddawela. Persons who have served as Members of Parliament for five years are eligible for a pension.
