With a furious late rally, Ananda College stormed to victory in the Boat Race of the inaugural Sri Lanka Schools Rowing Championships Regatta, organised by the Schools Rowing Association together with the Colombo Rowing Club, at the Beira Lake yesterday.

This year’s boat race was indeed exciting as from the crew from Asian International School (AIS) took off leaving the other crews behind but as they passed the 850m mark the Ananda College crew and the S. Thomas’s College crew as well as the Royal College caught up with them to give AIS a good fight. However it was in the last 300 meters, better known as the’ take her home’ stretch, that both the boys from Ananda and S. Thomas’s showed what they were made of as they left the Royalists and AIS boys to really fight it out to the finish with Ananda in first place and S. Thomas’s just a few strokes behind.

S. Thomas’s College went on to win the overall Under 20 men’s category. Captain of the Thomian crew Sajin De Livera said that now his crew would train harder for the upcoming Royal-Thomian regatta and that he is honoured to lead such great team.

Musaeus College bagged the women’s under 20 title even though their crew was very young and were considered the ‘not experienced enough’ this year. Captain of the crew Venuri Wickramasekere said that since they were able to do this well at the School Rowing Championships, she hoped that the team would be able to put up a good show at this year’s Ladies College-Musaeus College regatta and bring back their glory achieved in 2010.

Along with the Under 20 senior age group category both women’s and men’s categories included the Under 14 category, Under 16 category and the Under 18 to compete in.

The women’s under 16 category was won by Visakha Vidyalaya while the men’s trophy was taken by the Royal College crew. Captain of the Visakha crew Samakya Gajanayeka said that ‘a book should never be judged by it cover’

The RC crew went on to claim the under 14 and under 18 men’s categories as well with a great performance with contributions being made by all its crew members. Vice Captain of the Royal crew, Sanjeewa Jayasuriya said that he and his captain were extremely proud to lead the Royal crew whatever the outcome.
