Wu Bangguo, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China, arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday on a goodwill visit.

Mr. Bangguo, who is here on the invitation of Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, will meet President Mahinda Rajapaksa and other political leaders to discuss bilateral relations and matters of mutual interest. He will also make several field trips to view progress in China-Sri Lanka business cooperation projects.

This year marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and China, and the 60th anniversary of the rubber-rice pact signed by the two countries.

“China stands ready to work with Sri Lanka to consolidate traditional friendships, expand practical cooperation, and take to a new high the all-around cooperative partnership based on sincere mutual support,” Mr. Bangguo said on arriving in Sri Lanka.
