All major roads in the northern province are in a badly dilapidated condition. Reconstruction work -including reconstruction of the A9 commenced in 2009.

The repairs remain incomplete and pose a major health hazard to residents as well as commuters. The roads, built during the pre-independence era are extremely narrow and needed to be broadened. Unfortunately the length of time and continuing dusty conditions have caused respiratory and visual problems to residents and commuters in the area.

R. Pathmanathan 48, a resident of Jaffna said his children have regularly fallen ill due to the dust raised.
He called on the authorities to take steps to expedite the projects.

Residents face respiratory and visual problems as a result of the dust raised by passing vehicles

Driving through the half-repaired roads raise clouds of dust, making maneuvering difficult and causing traffic snarl-ups

Work on this road seems to have come to a standstill. Only idle machinery remains
