Lanka fifth in Lisbon

Namal Pathirage reporting from Lisbon, Portugal

Even though Sri Lanka has been taking pat in several overseas competitions, there have been no marked improvements in them, said Hemasiri Fernando, President of the Sri Lanka Olympic Committee in Lisbon yesterday.

Not only the Sports Ministry, but the Education Ministry too should take the blame for this, said Hemasiri. If both these ministries can work hand-in-hand, better results could be seen in the near future. The 12 nation Lusafornia Games ended amidst pomp and pageantry in this ancient city yesterday. Sri Lanka performed creditably to win three medals (1 gold and 4 bronze) and occupied the 5th position. The only gold medal winner at the meet was Daminda Wijekoon in the 1500 meters. The bronze medal winners were Chandrika Subashini and Gayan Kumara.
