My daughter Subashini Mathisha Fernandopulle took part in Western Province Schools Sports festival on June 26, 2009 at Sugathadasa Stadium in the 100 Metres under 11 Girls. event.
Although my daughter won the second place in this event very clearly, it was recorded in the certificate as third place. There was a close competition between first and second, but there was a clear gap to the third.
It was felt by most that a fraudulent act has taken place in switching second to the third.
School Coach, Private Coach and a few other coaches present on this day pointed out to the relevant judges about this unfair decision; but there was no positive response. There were also a few similar incidents taken place on this day.
My opinion is that this type of unfortunate incidents can be avoided if necessary inquiries and action can be taken by relevant authorities against the persons involved in this type of fraudulent acts.
It is evident that athletes will get discouraged due to incidents of this nature and it will also adversely affect the Sri Lanka sports too.
It is my opinion that if video camera system is available judges cannot take wrong decisions like this.
