Dinesh, Imesh and Aswin walk the talk
Bata-the Sunday Times Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year Show on August 7

Any new plan once put into action and takes deep roots converts into a tradition and traditions hardly die. Over three decades ago Batas came up with the idea of going on with the programme of recognizing and awarding young school cricket talent with the Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year Show and now thirty years later it has become tradition.

Many a today’s cricketing stalwart has walked down the stage and climbed that stage proudly in their college blazers to be crowned as the kings of schools cricket of a given year and this there is no exception. This year once again Bata Shoe Company along with the Sunday Times has identified the three schoolboys who are best above the rest for the second year running.

On the seventh of August 2009 history will repeat when Ananda’s prolific batsman Dinesh Chandimal would emulate some his school peers by walking down the isle of the BMICH to be crowned as the Schoolboy Cricketer of the year – Allisland. At the selections held at the Hotel Galadari last week by representatives of the ACUSL and the SLSCA Chandimal was elected as the Best Batsman and the Best captain in the Allisland category besides being selected as the Schoolboy Cricketer of the year.
The Ananda College skipper in eighteen matches scored 1560 runs that contained four centuries and nine half centuries. He also led Ananda to a 13 outright win all time record in school cricket history. However the Anandians had one blemish this year by losing to Royal who eventually were selected as the best Team for 2009. .

Along with Chandimal, Dharmasoka Vidyalaya Ambalangoda’s promising allrounder Imesh Udayanga was chosen as the Outstation Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year, while Lyceum International’s Aswin Hanifa was chosen as the Most Promising Player among the International School Cricketers.
Udayanga in twelve matches scored 812 runs making two centuries and six half centuries. He also bagged 73 wickets during the season.

For his contribution to his schools’ cause this year, Udayanga was chosen as the Best Allrounder Outstation as well the runner-up Best Bowler, besides the Main award that he was bestowed with.
