Dhanushka Ranjan scores season’s first hat-trick of tries

By Harry Jayachandra
St. Peter’s overcame a stout hearted opposition from Mahanama to win their schools rugby game by 48 points (4 goals, 4 tries) to 15 (1 goal, 1 try and a penalty) at Bambalapitiya yesterday. At the break St. Peter’s led 26-10. The score line however does not give a true indication of the fight that the Mahanamians put in.

For the first time this season the honour of scoring a hat-trick of tries fell on Peterite Dhanushka Ranjan when their hard running winger ran through with great determination to score three tries. The other tries for the Bambalapitiya lads were scored by scrum half Asitha Ratnayake, stand off Bhanuka
Nanayakkara, center Anusha Fernando, second rower Shenal Abeysekera and Shenal Dias. The conversions were by Bhanuka Nanayakkara.

Mahanama who had been at the receiving end of most games showed some pluk but lacked the know how to get the better of the Peterites.

Winger Chathura Shanka, second rower Dimantha Nuwangama Siyaguna scored the tries with flanker Mahesh Eranga Kumaranayake adding the extra points.

The Peterites dominated play and outstanding for them were Shenal Dias and No 8 Keith Gurusinghe.
Referee Aruna Jayasekera.
