Peace dog Aloka set to join Buddhist monks’ Walk for Peace
View(s):Aloka – the peace dog – is expected to travel with a group of Buddhist monks from the United States to Sri Lanka for the week-long “Walk for Peace” scheduled to start on April 21.
Aloka, who accompanied the monks who undertook the 2,300-mile Walk for Peace across the US, became the star attraction with millions turning up to get a glimpse of the unlikely star.
A source familiar with the Sri Lanka peace march event said discussions are underway to see how Aloka can be transported with comfort and safety by air. “At the moment, it’s a 50-50 chance Aloka will accompany the monks, but all efforts are being made for him to be part of the Sri Lanka peace march,” the source said.
For the “Walk for Peace Programme in Sri Lanka”, twelve monks led by the founder of the American peace walk, Venerable Pannakara Thero, will receive blessings in front of the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in historic Anuradhapura on April 21. A sapling of the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi, obtained with the blessings of the Maha Sangha led by the Chief Incumbent of the Atamasthana, will also be carried during the peace walk.
On the morning of April 22, following the offering of Sanghagatha Dakshina, the peace walk will resume from the sacred city of Dambulla. The procession is scheduled to pass through Naula, Matale, Kandy, Kadugannawa, Kegalle, Tholangamuwa, Kajugama, Yakkala, Mahara, and Kelaniya before reaching Independence Square on April 28.
The sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi will be handed over by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to the Maha Sangha, who arrived from the United States. The monks will carry the scared sapling with them on their return journey.
