Newly refurbished Colombo Central Bus Stand declared open
View(s):The newly refurbished Central Bus Stand in Colombo was declared open this week, following a year-long redevelopment spearheaded by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF).
The project, completed under the Government’s “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative, marked the overhaul of the Pettah terminal since its establishment in 1964. Handling an estimated 75,000 passengers and nearly 2,000 buses daily, the terminal remains the busiest transport hub in Sri Lanka.

Launched in September last year, the work was carried out around the clock and brought to completion within months within the allocated budget of approximately Rs. 424 million.
Key improvements include resurfaced bus bays, upgraded drainage systems, modern sanitary facilities, and reorganised passenger flow areas. Administrative offices, rest areas for transport staff, and limited commercial spaces have also been incorporated into the upper floors.
Authorities say the redesign aims to streamline operations and improve commuter experience, particularly during peak hours when congestion has historically plagued the terminal.
The project required coordination between multiple state institutions, including the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB), the Colombo Municipal Council, and urban planning authorities.
