Sri Lanka has appealed to the United States to reconsider tariffs imposed on Lankan goods in view of the ongoing conflict, given the new economic challenges the country is facing.

The request was made when Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath and senior officials from the ministries of trade and finance on Thursday met with the US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, Sergio Gor, in Colombo this week.

The Sunday Times learns that the US envoy had promised to look into the matter.

The US official briefed officials here on the evolving situation in West Asia.

In August last year the US adjusted its trade policy, reducing the tariff on Sri Lankan imports to 20%. Earlier in the year, the proposed rates were as high as 44% but subsequently adjusted to 30% and finally 20%.
