Selvern Trust introduces spoken English learning app

A new digital learning initiative aimed at strengthening workplace communication has been launched with the introduction of SELVE, a spoken English application developed by the Selvern Trust.

The app uses artificial intelligence (AI) to guide users through interactive conversations designed to improve confidence in spoken English. SELVE is now available for download on both the Apple App Store and Google Play, with a free trial being offered during March 2026.

The initiative responds to a challenge many professionals in Sri Lanka continue to face. While technical knowledge and qualifications may be strong, the ability to communicate comfortably in English often determines how confidently individuals navigate interviews, meetings and workplace discussions. For some, the difficulty in expressing ideas in English can slow career progress despite their capabilities, officials said at a recent media conference.

The Selvern Trust says the idea for SELVE emerged from observing how frequently this barrier affects students, young professionals and employees across different industries. The aim was to create a learning tool that allows users to practise English in realistic situations rather than relying solely on traditional classroom learning.

Founder Chairman of the Selvern Trust Vijendran Watson said the project was driven by a desire to make language learning practical and accessible.

“We noticed that proficiency in English was one of the most significant barriers for aspiring young professionals. Our intention was to create a practical and accessible solution for everyone from students to executives in corporates to overcome linguistic barriers to success. We are extremely pleased with the results we have seen so far and hope this will help others realise their utmost potential,” he said.

The app begins with a short assessment that determines a user’s current level of English proficiency. Based on this, the system gradually introduces lessons designed to strengthen spoken communication and build confidence in everyday situations.

Recognising Sri Lanka’s multilingual environment, the platform also supports Sinhala and Tamil speakers. Users can briefly switch to their native language when clarification is needed, while the app continues responding in English so that the learning environment remains focused on building conversational skills.
