Nestle Lanka marks 120 years

Nestle Lanka has completed 120 years of operations in Sri Lanka, marking a milestone that reflects both the longevity of multinational food companies in the local market and the changing nature of the country’s consumer and manufacturing landscape.

The company traces its presence in Sri Lanka back to 1906. Over time, it has expanded its operations to become one of the country’s largest food and beverage manufacturers, with more than 90 per cent of the products sold locally now produced within Sri Lanka.

The growth of the company mirrors the broader development of Sri Lanka’s processed food sector, where multinational brands have gradually built local production, supply chains and distribution networks to serve a steadily expanding consumer market.

Nestle Lanka’s product range spans several food and beverage categories that cater to different age groups and nutritional requirements.

At the same time, the company’s operations extend beyond manufacturing into agricultural supply chains that support its raw material requirements. Nestle Lanka works with dairy and coconut farmers across the country through long term sourcing relationships and development programmes designed to improve productivity and strengthen rural livelihoods.

Nestle Lanka has also introduced programmes aimed at strengthening workforce readiness among young people. Through the Nestle Needs YOUth initiative, the company provides training and exposure opportunities intended to improve employability for young Sri Lankans entering the labour market.

Within its workforce, the company has sought to promote diversity and inclusion through initiatives that support broader participation in employment. Partnerships with organisations such as BConnected have helped create employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities, contributing to wider workplace accessibility.

In recent years, environmental sustainability has become a growing area of focus for companies in the global food and beverage industry. Nestle Lanka has aligned its operations with the broader corporate ambition of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Looking ahead, Nestle Lanka has set a target of becoming plastic neutral by 2026 as part of its sustainability agenda.

Commenting on the milestone, Chairman and Managing Director Bernie Stefan said the anniversary reflects the long standing relationship the company has developed with Sri Lankan consumers, farmers and communities over more than a century.
