At UCL, this concept goes beyond academic preparation, it focuses on shaping confident, capable, and globally minded learners within one powerful year.
Guided by its unique promise, One Powerful Year | Transformative Education | Foundation to Global Success, the UCL Foundation School has been strategically designed around three core pillars: Teaching and Learning, Learning Support, and Student Experience.
Under Teaching and Learning, UCL is deeply committed to excellence in teaching and academic quality. Regular teacher training and refresher programmes are integral to enhancing innovative teaching practices and fostering a strong understanding of student needs. Through structured peer observation and feedback mechanisms, the school ensures consistent quality assurance and continuous improvement in classroom delivery.
Learning Support begins at the start of each semester with Mathematics and English proficiency assessments to identify students’ academic needs. Students who require additional assistance are carefully identified and guided through structured support programmes led by the Student Wellbeing Advisor and the Learning Support Circle, ensuring that no student is left behind in their academic journey.
In addition to academic assistance, the UCL Foundation School provides a comprehensive student wellbeing and emotional support service. Students have access to guidance, mentoring, and professional support when needed, ensuring a safe and nurturing environment that promotes both personal resilience and academic success.
The Student Experience pillar introduces a vibrant calendar of soft skills development throughout the year. Workshops on Presentation Skills, Public Speaking, Financial Literacy, Entrepreneurial Skills, Digital Competency, Research Skills, and Mental Wellbeing will be
conducted monthly. Signature initiatives such as the “Reading Lab” and “Math Coffee Hour” will foster independent learning and collaboration. Guest lectures, career guidance
sessions, and community service projects will provide real-world exposure and promote social
responsibility.
