Sisu Seriya to be expanded with 200 new buses
View(s):The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education and the Ministry of Transport have taken steps to streamline the Sisu Seriya school bus service this year.
200 new buses are to be added for this purpose, Deputy Minister of Education Madura Seneviratne said at a press conference attended by officials of the National Transport Commission.
The bus service is jointly implemented by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Transport.
The Deputy Minister said that taking relevant measures to transport school students safely will be considered a key priority. The plans will cost around Rs 1 billion and the money has been allocated for the programme this year.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the NTC, P A Chandrapala and the Commission’s Director of Planning, Aloka Karunaratne said that several new measures are already being introduced to further streamline the service.
NTC officials also announced that private bus operators and small-scale safe vehicle owners are being invited to support the expansion of the service island wide.
