Govt. accelerates rebuilding Sri Lanka infrastructure drive
The government has accelerated the structured disbursement of reconstruction capital and oversight of large-scale infrastructure projects making use of the money raised by the “Rebuilding Sri Lanka” Fund on the directions and the supervision of the 7-member Management Committee
The committee operates as a statutory body under the Presidential Secretariat. It is a collaborative group featuring both high-level government officials and prominent business figures.
Funds are channeled through the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) for both immediate relief and long-term reconstruction, such as restoring bridges, rail networks, and schools, a senior official of the Finance Ministry told the Business Times.
He revealed that the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has developed a digital reporting system for the fund free of charge, with technical support from Microsoft.
Over Rs. 8.5 billion has been received by the fund from local businesses and citizens and international contributions, ministry data showed.
The US is the largest contributor (around $ 3.25 million), followed by Australia, China, and the UK.
It has secured significant corporate commitments, including Rs. 420 million from Dialog Axiata for healthcare and education infrastructure and Rs. 500 million from Bank of Ceylon.
Approximately Rs. 24.4 billion has been released from state funds as of late February for various relief measures in addition to the disbursement of “Rebuilding Sri Lanka” fund for the reconstruction of devastated infrastructure and financial stimulus, ministry data shows.
Critical projects that were stalled due to the cyclone, such as the Kandy- Gatambe Flyover, are reportedly set to resume construction in early February after being cleared by the committee.
The committee has been overseeing a plan to build over 50,000 houses in 2026 using existing allocations as well as a $4.1 billion preliminary estimate that was drawn up with the assistance of the World Bank.
