Apparel 2026 fears slowdown in US, Europe
Fear of a weakening demand sentiment for garments in some of Sri Lanka’s key markets like the US, UK and the EU has caused serious concern in the face of global competition.
Industry experts point out that this year the industry fears there will be much weaker demand than last year due to a weaker sentiment among consumers in markets like the US.
Although economically the US is doing well in terms of its numbers with low inflation and very low unemployment, industry officials note there is a weaker sentiment among the US consumer.
However, there is no major shift in demand experienced at the moment although going forward the situation is likely to change.
Potential challenges are observed from competitor nations like Indonesia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Cambodia, it was noted and amidst these is the new and growing threat from countries like Egypt.
Egypt and Africa are finding growing foreign investments that pose a challenge in line with the low cost of production compared to Sri Lanka.
The Apparel Sourcing and Trading Outlook for 2026 indicate that the global fashion apparel industry will continue to face two macro level challenges in 2026.
One is a relatively weak consumer demand for clothing amid sluggish economic growth and persistent inflationary pressures. It has also stated that clothing retail sales in key apparel import markets including the US and Western Europe could be stagnant or even decline in 2026. Gen Z has now become more cautious about shopping for clothing, especially for new items.
In this respect there is a declining consumer sentiment with consumers expected to continue trading down and seeking better value and reducing discretionary spending, leading to stagnant or declining retail sales.
Sri Lanka last week witnessed the announcement of the closure of a garment factory owned by the MAS group, the Mithliya plant at the MAS Fabric Park in Thulhiriya.
More than just a closure of a garment factory it is the transitioning of a garment factory into a fabric manufacturing plant clearly highlighting the company’s growing strategy to create an increasing base for fabrics.
The company has announced that they are willing to absorb the employees into factories in other locations within the country and even in far flung Jordan.
It was pointed out that the sewing machine operators and staff at this plant have been given the option to take up positions in other plants in Sri Lanka and overseas and continue their employment at the MAS organisation.
MAS noted that with the global volatility in demand for apparel these are strategic changes needed to be made to remain competitive.
