UGC mandates staff supervision at all student-organised university events
View(s):The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a circular directing vice chancellors of state universities to ensure that all student-organised university events be conducted under the supervision of a responsible university officer until further notice.
The circular, issued by UGC Chairman Prof Kapila Seneviratne, states that it has come to the attention of the UGC’s Centre for Gender Equity/Equality (CGEE) that a number of complaints have been received regarding student-organised events conducted in state universities without the supervision of responsible university officers. “Such events pose serious risks to the safety and wellbeing of students and undermine the responsibility of universities to maintain a safe, secure, and conducive learning environment,” the circular said.
The UGC has directed that all student-organised university events be conducted under the supervision of a responsible university officer until further notice. It has further directed university authorities to ensure that a staff member or a responsible university official is present at all times during rehearsals and preparations (including setting up decorations), during the event itself, and after the event until all students have dispersed.
“Events that do not comply with the above directive should not be held under any circumstances,” the circular said. (SJ)
