Sri Lanka’s healthcare is set to benefit from a new international collaboration as Universal College Lanka (UCL) and King’s Hospital partner with the University of Lancashire, UK, to deliver professional development and upskilling programmes locally.
The initiative aims to address urgent needs in the health sector, including continuous professional development (CPD), skills enhancement, and exposure to international best practices. With an ageing population, rising chronic diseases, and evolving care models, healthcare professionals must regularly update their skills to remain effective.
The new programme will focus on practice-relevant learning, combining UK academic frameworks with clinically informed locally relevant content drawn from King’s Hospital’s operational expertise. Designed for working professionals, the courses will emphasise flexibility, applied learning, and immediate relevance to clinical and healthcare settings.
“Healthcare learning doesn’t end at qualification, it evolves with patient needs,” said Dr. Chamila Ariyananda, CEO of UCL. “Continuous professional development is essential to building a future-ready healthcare system and workforce. We now have the ability to deliver world-class healthcare education in Sri Lanka, empowering professionals locally while meeting global standards.”
Dr Banagla, Diretcor from King’s Hospital highlighted the importance of structured upskilling, “Healthcare professionals today are operating in increasingly demanding environments. High-quality, structured learning opportunities enable them to adapt to new clinical practices, improve patient outcomes, and take on expanded or leadership roles within the system.”
International evidence consistently shows that healthcare systems investing in ongoing professional development achieve better workforce retention, improved service quality, and stronger patient outcomes. By delivering these programmes locally, the partnership aims to reduce barriers to access while supporting Sri Lanka’s broader healthcare capacity-building goals.
Beyond individual career advancement, the initiative reflects a strategic commitment to strengthening Sri Lanka’s healthcare ecosystem. By equipping professionals with globally relevant skills without requiring overseas study, the collaboration supports sustainable workforce development.
The partnership between UCL, King’s Hospital, and UCL marks an important step in expanding access to high – quality professional education. It positions Sri Lanka to benefit from global academic – clinical expertise while empowering healthcare professionals to remain competitive, confident, and future-ready in a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.
