Education in New Zealand

New Zealand is moving higher up the ladder of top choices of study destinations as students look for quality education in a safe, welcoming, and stimulating environment. Driving this global reputation is Education New Zealand ManapoukiteAo (ENZ), the New Zealand government agency responsible for promoting the country’s world-class education offering internationally and strengthening global connections through learning.

ENZ’s focus is on ensuring students from Sri Lanka and around the world have a positive experience studying in New Zealand. The agency is dedicated to helping New Zealand realise the social, cultural, and economic benefits of international education. This work supports New Zealand’s wider goals of developing skilled talent, boosting innovation, growing the economy, and deepening international relationships. Today, international education is one of New Zealand’s top export sectors, contributing NZD 4.52 billion in 2025, demonstrating both its resilience and global demand.

However, international education is not just an economic driver for New Zealand – it’s a bridge to the world. New Zealanders appreciate the broad range of cultural and social benefits that international students bring to the country. As confirmed in ENZ’s 2025 Public Perceptions of International Education Survey, 77 percent of New Zealanders want to see the same or more international students in the country, up from 75 percent in 2024.

For Sri Lankan learners, New Zealand offers exceptional academic value. Ranked 5th in the world for higher education quality (QS World University Rankings 2026), the country is known for its innovative teaching approaches, emphasis on creativity and critical thinking, and strong research capabilities. Universities are deeply engaged in solving real-world problems across STEM, health, infrastructure, and economics – areas highly relevant to Sri Lankan students’ aspirations.

New Zealand’s wider environment enhances the appeal. As the 3rd most peaceful country globally (Global Peace Index 2025), it provides a safe and welcoming setting for international students adjusting to life abroad.

According to ENZ’s 2025 International Student Experience Survey, 87 percent of learners rated their overall experience positively. New Zealand’s growing popularity is also evident in enrolment trends: 3,120 Sri Lankan students enrolled between January and August 2025, marking an impressive 57 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024.

Students also benefit from strong work opportunities. International learners can work up to 25 hours per week during term time and full-time during academic breaks. Graduates of bachelor’s level qualifications and above are eligible for a three-year Post-Study Work Visa, enabling them to launch their careers, gain global exposure, and step confidently into skilled employment.

With its globally respected education system, outstanding safety record, and excellent work pathways, New Zealand remains one of the most compelling destinations for Sri Lankan students seeking a transformative, globally connected international education.

Thames International will be conducting The New Zealand Education Fair 2026 on Saturday 7th March at Galle Face Hotel, Colombo and Sunday 8th March at Queens Hotel, Kandy. The events
