Opposition Samagi Jana Balwegaya Parliamentarian Harshana Rajakaruna has handed over a private member’s bill to amend the Online Safety Act with the aim of protecting children from harm arising from the use of social media.

The amendment seeks to introduce age-specific safeguards, parental consent, child-appropriate privacy and safety settings, and other measures to reduce exposure of children to harmful content.

The bill proposes changes to the law to set, by way of rules and codes of practice, child-safety standards applicable to websites providing social media platforms to end users in Sri Lanka.

The bill, if enacted, will assess child-safety risk assessments carried out by platform providers whose services are likely to be accessed by children and issue directions for litigation of risks identified therein, as well as monitor compliance by platform providers.
