An economy of a country is successful only if the people benefit, says President at Independence Day celebrations
View(s):Charm and simplicity marked the 78th National Independence Day celebrations on February 4 at Independence Square.
More than 4,500 members representing the tri-forces and police added colour to the event. Over 500 performers—selected from the armed forces, police, National Youth Services Council, National Dancing Squad, and cultural centres including Manmunai North, Akkaraipattu, and Sainthamaruthu—took part in the cultural pageant. Participants also represented the Merrill J. Fernando Charitable Foundation, the Battaramulla Folk Art Centre, and the Western Province Aesthetic Resort.
Addressing the nation, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasised that an economy’s success is not measured by data alone, but by how its benefits reach the people.
“If the lives of citizens are not improved, if livelihoods are not made easier, and if people are not granted the freedom and dignity to live, then even the strongest economic data becomes meaningless,” the President said.
