Seven fishermen caught with thresher shark
Seven fishermen were arrested along with 876.2 kg of thresher shark (Alopias vulpinus) by the Sri Lanka Coastguard in a special operation conducted at the Wellamankara fisheries harbour on Friday.
The thresher shark, locally known as “kasa mora”, can reach around 20 feet in length. It was listed as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in 2007.
Sri Lanka Coastguard Deputy Director General J. A. P.C. Jayasinghe said it is prohibited to catch this species under the Fisheries Act. They nabbed the suspects along with the fish as the suspect vessel arrived at the harbour.
The suspects, identified as residents of Wennappuwa and Chilaw, along with the seized shark and vessel were handed over to the Fisheries Inspector’s office in Wennappuwa.
