Nuwara Eliya frost damaging crops, farmers moan
With the extreme cold experienced in many areas in Nuwara Eliya District, ground frost could be experienced in some of these areas. This could damage to crops in these areas.
The residents in the area explained that with the extreme cold conditions experienced in the area they witness the ground frost which had accumulated on the crops. When the sun’s rays fall on the crops, the frost melts and turns to water and damages the cultivation.
The farmers said that those who bore the damages caused by Cyclone Ditwah are once more affected as their crops are at risk while small children and old people are at risk of getting sick.
The Sunday Times observed the ground frost at Nuwara Eliya Race course grounds, golf grounds and Gregory’s parks. Potato, salad and cabbage cultivation are being damaged due the prevailing condition.
