Gazette notification to be issued for new political parties to register
View(s):A gazette notification will be issued on Thursday calling for applications to register new political parties for 2026, Election Commission Chairman R. M. A. L. Rathnayake said.
He revealed that, out of the 83 parties that applied last year, only five were officially approved under the Parliamentary Elections Act and recognized by the Election Commission.
The parties include the Socialist Alliance, People’s Participatory Democratic Front, Malaiyaga Political Arena, Samaththuva Kadchi, and Revolutionary People’s Power. With these, the total number of recognised political parties has risen to 85.
Both Socialist Alliance and Samaththuva Kadchi were rejected in 2024 for failing to submit the proper documents. They were registered after subsequently meeting all eligibility requirements.
According to Mr. Rathnayake, a political party must meet several specific qualifications and procedural requirements to be registered.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission has requested a meeting with the Justice Minister to fast track the long-delayed proposed reforms to the Election Commission Act. They were submitted to previous governments “years ago” and later to the current administration, Mr. Rathanayake said.
He also confirmed that there was no notification so far regarding any upcoming elections.
