The government has made allocations in the 2026 budget for various higher education institutes with allocations for the sector increasing to 2 per cent.

These include allocations to improve facilities in various faculties in state-run universities, Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education Madura Seneviratne said. There are also additional allocations to develop infrastructure facilities in the universities as well as increase the Mahapola scholarship payments and bursaries given to the students, he said.

Rs 50 million has been allocated to make a monthly payment for Rs5,000 each to students with disabilities.

Allocations have also been made to assist with the digitization for some universities.

The Opposition told parliament this week the allocations were below the amounts promised during the pre-election period by members currently in the government.  (DW)
