Nugegoda Additional Magistrate Suranga Munasinghe on Friday disssolved the stay order that had prevented the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club (NEGC) from amending and adopting a new regulation aimed at precluding its members from taking legal action against the club at an upcoming Special General Meeting (SGM). The earlier stay order had restrained the NEGC from holding its SGM scheduled for October 19 and from taking any further action until October 30, the date initially set for the hearing of the case.

When the matter was taken up on Friday, the petitioner’s request to extend the stay order was rejected after the Magistrate considered the submissions made by President’s Counsel Dilrukshi Dias, who appeared on behalf of the respondents. The respondents, representing the current NEGC administration, have been accused of engaging in corrupt practices, including the unauthorised felling of large trees within the golf course premises — an act from which certain individuals are alleged to have derived financial benefits.

The NEGC administration has also been accused by several members of attempting to introduce a regulation that would prevent members from seeking legal redress or initiating legal proceedings against the club. The respondents were notified of the stay order and the next hearing date via email under the instructions of the District Court. The case is scheduled to be taken up again on November 27.
