A Sri Lankan domiciled in Germany wants to invest in the country’s future economy as he eyes potential in the tourism, education and cuisine sectors by creating more jobs and strengthening ties between the two countries.
Thushaan Kunabalasingam who is the Lead of the Ocean Cruise Line in North America of Livecookintable has been in Colombo with the aim of expanding the company’s key product – the modular kitchen concept of open cooking.
Currently they are working with Cinnamon Hotels that has already spent a large amount on the purchase of the modular kitchen.
In a bid to further expand this concept where you can easily assemble and take down a kitchen, Livecokintable is looking at the possibility of engaging Sri Lanka Cricket to set up a similar product at the Mullaitivu cricket stadium.
Livecookintable is hoping to expand its operations to Sri Lanka in the hotel, stadium and catering industries, he said.
Mr. Kunabalasingam pointed out that they have promoted their product in Jaffna as well and are currently in talks with a few hotels in the north in this regard.
In this respect, by 2027 Livecookingtable hopes to generate investment to the country by expanding their operations into Colombo.
“Sri Lanka has improved a lot from politics with the new President and I think a lot of things will be in a very good way,” he said.
He also pointed out that a number of companies similar to theirs has expressed interest in entering Sri Lanka as the economy is on the right track.
Moreover, another key area of focus is the cruise liners that Sri Lanka has the potential to attract. Mr. Kunabalasingam explained that since he is in contact with a number of leading cruise liners operating to various destinations and some coming as close as India, he believed there is potential to open up an operation to encourage liners to visit Colombo.
In this respect, he has been in discussion with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) Chairman. Some operations like the Viking River Cruise calls at India but not into Colombo. As a result Mr. Kunabalasingam wants to market the destination as a key hotspot for cruise operators.
In addition, Mr. Kunabalasingam wants to expand the education sector in Sri Lanka with collaborations with German universities.
In this respect, he said he had already visited a number of different faculties at the Universities of Colombo (Tourism), Jaffna (Medical), Rajarata (Tourism) and Moratuwa (Business Economics).
He hopes to expand the opportunities for local students to learn in Germany where education for its citizens is free. He noted that he hopes to engage another company to invest in the education sector in the areas he has identified.
