Cement dust cloud threatens Hambantota communities

Severe dust pollution caused by transportation and handling of cement raw materials near the Hambantota Port has caused a public uproar, with locals accusing several companies of causing widespread environmental degradation and health risks.

According to residents, raw materials such as clinker, gypsum, and cement-producing slag are being loaded, unloaded, and transported without confinement, releasing thick plumes of dust into the surrounding air.

While some companies have established covered conveyor belt systems to minimise emissions, others continue to store goods in open areas and transport them through open trucks from Hambantota to factories in Galle, increasing the extent of pollution.

The continuous flow of open lorries has enveloped the air with dust and chemical particles. “Individuals are falling ill in their lungs, and long-term exposure has made some wonder about more serious health problems,” said a resident.

Experts say prolonged breathing of fine cement raw material particles may lead to chronic lung diseases and increase cancer risks. Environmentalists urge the public to implement the use of covered conveyor systems immediately in the transport and warehousing of cement products to prevent further deterioration of the environment. “Using enclosed conveyor belts decreases the release and spillage of dust, a cleaner better option,” an environmentalist added.

Residents in the area pleaded with the Central Environmental Authority and port officials to act immediately to control the transport of cement and set stricter pollution controls.
