Some observations on a recent trip to Yala

Currently there is significant growth in Sri Lanka’s tourism industry. This is a great boost to the country’s economy. However, there are still some shortcomings in the institutions related to the sector.

I would like to highlight a few matters I observed during my recent visit, with my close relatives, to Yala National Park. We arrived at the park at around 6 a.m. and the staff there told us that tickets would be issued at 6.15 a.m. By this time, many safari jeeps with local and foreign tourists had already parked at the location. However, the issuance of tickets didn’t start until about 6.30 a.m.

After getting the tickets, we entered the Yala reserve but we couldn’t  see any animals other than a herd of deer, peacocks and rarely one or two elephants. When I asked the jeep driver about this he said that due to the prevailing hot weather animals don’t roam like on other days. He also mentioned that in previous years the park was closed during this dry season but this year it was kept open because many tourists are visiting.

Tourists who come here with a strong desire to see various types of animals and birds, but would be disappointed by this safari experience. The authorities concerned need to pay attention and take appropriate action.
