Supreme Court Justice Janak De Silva has been appointed to inquire into the charge sheet filed against a High Court Judge.
The appointment has been made by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena in his capacity as Chairman of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
A charge sheet consisting of 477 charges was served on the judge, a senior-most sitting high court judge, during the term of former Chief Justice Murdu Fernando.
Justice De Silva was appointed to inquire into the charges following the consideration of the replies submitted by the judge in relation to the charges against him.
The charge sheet against the high court judge had been served following a preliminary inquiry into several complaints alleging that there had been many instances where the High Court judge had submitted reports claiming that cases he had been presiding over in various high courts he served in had been concluded when this had not been the case. It had also been alleged that he had been transferring cases from the trial list to the calling list for basic reasons.
