Ranil’s UK visit: CID to file case against Saman Ekanayake
View(s):By Damith Wickremasekara
A case is to be filed against former Presidential Secretary Saman Ekanayake over allegations he approved funds for the 2023 UK leg of the visit by then President Ranil Wickremesinghe and his delegation, a senior government source said yesterday.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is to submit a report to courts in this regard
The move comes after the Colombo Fort Magistrate directed the Department of Immigration and Emigration to impound Mr. Ekanayaka’s passport in keeping with a request by the CID.
One of the allegations against Mr Ekanayake is the release of state funds for a private visit, without carrying out proper verification in the capacity of the chief accounting officer.
The CID, in its ‘B’ report submitted to the magistrate’s court on Friday, said that it may need to record further evidence from Mr. Ekanayake related to the case, and if he travels overseas, the work of the police would be impeded. It sought an order directing the Controller of Immigration and Emigration to impound his passport.
Meanwhile, the government source said the ongoing legal process in the ‘bond scam’ would continue even though the former governor of the Central Bank, Arjun Mahendran, the main accused in the case, is missing. “We will try him in absentia,” the source said, adding that evidence against the former president in relation to this case has surfaced and that too would also be presented to court.
