Muslim community grieved by coroner’s delays, CMC member says
View(s):Delays over the release of bodies from the coroner’s court was raised during this week’s Colombo Municipal Council meeting.
Municipal Council Member M.S.M Ramzi Tony alleged that he has been receiving complaints that a specific inquirer into sudden deaths, Anuththara Rajapaksa delayed releasing bodies and that the Muslim community especially was inconvenienced as traditionally funeral procedures of the community were carried out within 24 hours of a person’s death.
The council member also claimed that the coroner had wanted post mortem investigations carried out even in circumstances where people had passed away due to natural causes such as old age in households. Mr. Tony pointed out that over 10 to 15 years back Edward Ahngama who was the only city coroner for Colombo had carried out the duties of a coroner even after midnight and respected the practices of the Muslim community.
At the meeting it was also revealed that coroners Ashroff Rumi and Iresha Deshani Samaraweera, who inquired into sudden deaths during weekdays carried out their their duties and released bodies on time.
However ,the coroner operating in the weekends had repeatedly delayed releasing bodies to a point where council members had received complaints, the counsellor explained.
Therefore a proposal was made that an inquiry should be held against the coroner by the Justice Minister and relevant action be taken.
Council member Husain Joosar told the council that a coroner was required to hold an inquiry into a death only when a doctor was unable to give a cause of death.
