Ranil in ICU for treatment and observation

Nearly 13 hours spent at CID headquarters and at the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court on Friday with no food and little water, had contributed to an increase in both the blood pressure and sugar levels of former president Ranil Wickremesinghe, causing kidney damage requiring admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the National hospital in Colombo, a source familiar with his health condition said yesterday.

Mr.Wickremesinghe had a gruelling Friday where after nearly six hours at the CID, where he was placed under arrest, he was taken to the Fort MC when the court sessions went past 10 p.m.

This included nearly one and half hours without electricity after a power outage left the courthouse in darkness and those inside sweltering.

When Mr.Wickremesinghe, who suffers from several ailments including high blood pressure, diabetes and an unspecified heart condition, arrived at the Welikada Remand Prisons past 11 p.m. on Friday, he was taken to the prison hospital where doctors there found both his pressure and sugar levels had increased.

The 76-year old former president had also been suffering from dehydration after the exhaustive day when he arrived at the prison premises.

The doctors there had started treatment for these conditions but by Saturday afternoon, with no significant drop in either the pressure or sugar levels, he was transferred to the National Hospital (NH) where he was first kept in the Emergency Treatment Unit (ETU) and from there moved to the ICU for treatment and observation.

“He was transferred to the NH on the advice of doctors at the prison’s hospital,” a medical officer at the NH said.

Mr. Wickremesinghe’s health condition figured prominently in the bail plea made by his counsel in court on Friday. They told Fort Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura that the former President suffered from several health conditions including high blood pressure and diabetes in addition to a heart condition and requested bail.

He was denied bail but the Court directed prison officials to provide Mr.Wickremesinghe with the necessary medical attention while he remains in their custody.
